Personality
Vaxus is an easy going person. Loves to joke around and smiles a lot. Polite because that how his mother raised him (he always was his mother little boy). She also taught him not to talk too much about himself and how to stir the conversation into the other direction. That makes him useful in diplomatic situations but he took this advice to his heart so deeply that he uses it with relationships as well. Once he’s comfortable in your company both his words and smile will become sincere. Loyal friend. Will stand by your side. Also passive. If helped he wouldn’t meddle into others business at all (that’s why he didn’t stopped Leliana from taking care of a traitor or did anything to pick the next Divine). Thinks that Dorian’s “You will do it all yourself” argument to keep him off Tevinter is silly, because he would be very much so content with doing nothing else than warming Dorian’s bed.
Before the Conclave - Family
Vaxus is the youngest son of Bann Trevelyan. Besides Valerin, his twin sister, he has three more brothers and two sisters. He’ve spent his days in Ostwick being carefree. He’s a skilled warrior, taught by his older sister Camille, and he’s up to any challenge.
With Valerin, Vax felt like they could do anything together. Val was the brain, he was the muscle. They wanted to adventure together. Of course both of them knew how unlikely it is. Both Val and Vax were supposed to end up either in Chantry or in Templar Order, depending on their interest. Vax figured out that as long as they are together it should be fine. (x)
As he grew older, things started to change. Vaxus developed a crush in his childhood friend, Alice. He started to see himself having a family when he grows up. It was a dream just like the venturing one. Dreams that ended when Val confessed to Vax she has magical abilities.
The prospect of Valerin ending up in the Circle didn’t set up with Vax very well. He convinced her they should keep it secret and promised he will help her with mastering her gift. Vaxus started reading lots of books about magic and seeking more information. At some point his parents suspected he was the mage. The secret saw the light when Valerin threw a fireball at Vax during their practice. He dodged the most of it, fireball catching his left side and leaving a terrible scar. Despite his pleads Valerin, scared for her brother health, called for their parents and told them everything. She was sent to the Circle. And Vaxus was restless.
They have plans. How could she just be taken away like that? Why would she go there willingly? They still kept in touch as often as they could. Trevelyans having connections in the Chantry which allowed Val to send letters on daily basis and even visit, in a company of a Templar, for some family events.
Vaxus tried to find peace. He was in a chaste relationship with Alice for some time. Their parents even discussed a possibility of marriage (Vax’s mother knew he wouldn’t really fit into the life of a Templar) when Vaxus announced he wants to become a Templar and stay in Ostwick’s Circle with Val. It didn’t sit right with him to live a life when his sister is closed in some tower. No matter how assuring she was that it’s not that bad.
He never went pass recruit tier tho. Templar way of thinking, the faith, it was all hard for Vax to swallow. Most of his time he’s spent in the kitchens or doing other manual tasks.
Once the riots in Kirwall began and it started to spread into Ostwick and Templar Order was falling apart, Vax left to stand by his sister, and other mages, side. After First Enchanter’s death Vax went with the remaining mages to the Conclave as an extra muscle and with hopes it will bring peace. Since Val didn’t want to run away.
Both Vaxus’ parents are still alive along with other siblings and Vax had a good relations with all of them except for eldest brother, an heir of Bann Trevelyan, who never understood Vax’s chaotic an irresponsible way of living.
Post Conclave
Confused and hurt. Torn apart and miserable. Vax wishes he died in the explosion. He’s a mess but tries to put on a brave face. Masks his feelings with humor and flirt. Doing many things at once. That’s his way of coping. He hates being alone in his room because then he stays with his own thoughts. The feeling that people need him is the only thing that gets him out of the bed. As long as they tell him what to do, his going to keep himself together. Although the pressure he feels is overwhelming. Never before anyone expected anything from him, less fixing the sky, saving the world. Becoming the Inquisitor. Responsibilities makes Vaxus stomach hurt and it takes him a long time to accept them with grace.
Cassandra
It didn’t start well. Cass accused Vax for mass murder while Vax was struggling to keep it together after the information than everyone, including Valerin, died in the Conclave. Next, Vax got hit on the head with the rock when Cassandra was dragging him through Haven. It left a scar on his forehead that’s usually covered with his cowlick (x). It made her feel bad later, the knowledge that the prisoner was treated so poorly under her wing but Vax rarely holds a grudge.
Leliana and Cassandra are the first to find out about Valerin (x). Cass was a great help to deal with grief due and she and Vax got close to each other rather quickly. They’ve build a relationship based on mutual respect and occasional flirting and friendly teasing on Vax’s part (flirting which made Cass briefly confuse it for something more).
Once in Skyhold, Cass is the one to back up Vaxus idea to go back to Haven to help building the memorial for the fallen at the Conclave (”I want to try to find some peace.”). The two of them go all alone leaving the rest of Inquisition to the Skyhold fixing. When they come back, a little lighter on his soul, Vax is announced as the Inquisitor. It took him by surprise and he never wanted this kind of responsibility but when he sees approval in Cass’ eyes he just goes along with it. Even though he’s sure she would be a way better choice for the Inquisition.
Even when Vax is a little overwhelmed with all the faith Cass puts in him, her opinion still matters a lot to him. They get along very well despite the rocky beginning. They wrestle and train together almost as eagerly as they talk about trashy novels and poetry.
Sera
Sera, with her pranks and attitude, keeps Vax grounded. Cass is a great friend, but whenever he needs to forget about responsibilities he goes to her. He sees a little bits of Val in her, even tho both woman are very much different. He just can’t help but to be drawn to Sera’s free spirit.
He’s often the main object of her pranks, not that he minds. The mischief is familiar. It reminds him of home and his siblings… Unless, of course Sera chooses to write with a permanent ink on his face (x) (x).
Sera catches up with Dorian and Vax feelings towards each other quite quickly but decides to tease them instead of helping in any way (x) (x). Sera is the next person to learn about Valerin. Once when Vax drank a little too much he started talking how both of them are alike. Then he passed out in her room. Sera haven’t given too much thought to that but she did asked Dorian about Val. Dorian on the other hand had no idea that Vax even had any siblings which made him question what he truly knows about his amatus.
Vaxus accepted Sera’s Red Jenny invitation and after Trespasser events Sera promised Dorian she will look after him. ”Don’t worry, yeah? I’ll keep an eye on him for you.” And they’ve become unseparable for the next two years (x).
Dorian
Vaxus has expected lots of things from the Inquisition. Most of them were related to the image of him dying in various scenarios, and Maker, maybe it was wrong, but he was actually at peace with this thought. It helped him cope with the whole situation. The never ending pressure and expectation.
What he didn’t expected was Dorian. And, oh boy, he was so easy to like from the start. His ”Don’t worry. I’m here. I’ll protect you.” took Vax completely by surprise and made his heart skip a beat for the first time since the Conclave. It made him feel almost like a human again and he loved it.
Once Dorian joined the Inquisition he had troubles with accommodating himself in camp full of people eager to judge (remember how they were fast to judge Herald after the explosion). So he got along with Vax rather quickly (x). For Dorian it was a friendly face in the ocean of suspicious Southerns. For Vaxus it was refreshing to find himself in a company of someone who’s treating him as an equal and not the salvation to the world.
Vaxus haven’t even noticed when he started seeking Dorian more and more, completely forgetting about his friendly flirting with other members of the Inquisition in the process. It was something new and exciting because Dorian actually flirted back.
Somewhere between the attack on Haven and the march to Skyhold Vaxus realized he might feel more. And that was very dangerous for a man who can die in any moment. It would be utterly unfair and selfish of him to pursue the relationship in this case. No matter how tempting Dorian lips were. And Maker, they seemed to be the sweetest thing.
He backed down. Dorian wanted to join him and Cass on the Haven quest (even though he had no idea why would Vax want to go back there but it seemed like a better alternative than sticking around with others in Skyhold) but Vaxus politely declined.
It took lots of friendly teasing, sexual tension, awkwardness, Alexius research sentence, Felix’s death, the meeting with Dorian’s father (reconcile version) and finally the talk with Mother Giselle for Dorian to finally explode and kiss Vax. Once Dorian’s lips was on his there was no way he could deny it himself this any longer. It was time to change his expectations.
Vax is a very romantic soul. If there is something cheesy that can be done – he will probably do it. Dorian wants music while riding down into the Deep Roads? Done. Vax will sing. Or maybe chum since his singing is kinda terrible. He tries not to overwhelm Dorian with his feelings and bites himself in the tongue many times just not to tell confession way too soon.
The one thing that worries Dorian about Vax is how long he knew nothing about Vaxus' past or Valerin (x). Vaxus doesn't want to burden anyone, especially Dorian, with his problems and he's great with changing the subject or deflect it with humor whenever Dorian tires to bring it up. It's not that Vax doesn't trust him, it's just... talking about Valerin is still hard and how can he admit the fears that his whole family now blames him for her death?
Vaxus asks Dorian to stay with him if he won’t have him in Tevinter.
Trespasser
It was a hard time for Vaxus. His hand started to get worse since Dorian went away to Tevinter for a month. But he tried to focus on a positive side – he might finally get free from the Inquisition and there was a proposal ring in his pocket (sent from Ostwick with love). Dorian promised Vax he would stay with him. Would go to Tevinter from time to time to help out Maevaris, but still come back. What none of them was expecting was the letter announcing Halward Pavus’ death and Dorian’s Magister title. That changed a lot (x).
At first Vaxus was miserable but tried to put a brave face. Then he started to think it’s for the better – his hand is killing him, at least Dorian will have something left, a seat in a Magisterium and a prospect of future in his home. It was comforting. He didn’t die.
What he did was swearing to stop Solas, disabling the Inquisition and suddenly realizing that prospect of Dorian leaving is now almost unbearable. But it would be even worse to try to stop his love from doing what’s right. He takes all the promises from Dorian and locks them in his heart. He give Dorian an engagement ring in return. A promise, it is? He goes with Varric and Sera to Kirkwall where he recovers.
Post Trespasser
Vaxus always wanted to visit Kirkwall, the city of the Champion. Once he actually started living there it wasn’t that pretty. He met Hawke friends who were still overcome by grief from Hawke’s presumed death in the Fade. Meeting Aveline or Merrill on daily basis, hearing the stories about the Champion, seeing Amell’s mansion every single day – it all become unbearable for Vax. He felt like an intruder. He never told Dorian about this in their daily conversations. He had enough on his mind without Vax’s complaining. Meanwhile Vax was training, practicing melee and one handed sword fighting pretending he doesn’t see Dorian’s people watching over him (x).
When he was more sure of his own abilities he asked Sera to leave Kirkwall with him for sake of adventuring and searching for Solas.
After some time he and Dorian decided that it’s time for the wedding and Vax gladly moved to Tevinter (x).
Felix
One night, when Vaxus is on a Red Jenny mission in Minrathous, he sees a slave trying to throw a newborn to the river. Vax stops him and the panicked man practically shoves the child into his arm saying that he could give this child a better life. Dorian and Vaxus decide to adopt the child. They name him Felix. Felix takes the last name after Dorian for practical reasons. They live in Tevinter after all and Dorian wants Felix to have the best start in life he could possibly have. That doesn't stop Vax's parents from call the Felix their little Trevelyan at every possible occasion. Felix's father reminds unknown. He recived a slightly pointed ears from his mother.
Much to Dorian's delight (and Vax's almost burned eyebrows) Felix turnes out to be a mage.
Little Felix is under no illusion that he's different from his fathers and tries very hard to look and act like them and there's no greater complement to him than the words "You are just like your father." (x) (x)
Felix my and Libra’s precious child. Libra is the best person ever and he wrote some amazing stories to this au. Check them out but prepare to be slayed with cuteness:
